['dʌnəvən], eigentlich Donovan Phillip Leitch, schottischer Rockmusiker, * Maryhill 10. 5. 1946; wurde 1965 in einer englischen Fernsehshow entdeckt und hatte bald darauf in Großbritannien erste Singlehits mit »Catch the Wind«, »Colours« und »Universal Soldier«. Wegen seiner poetischen Folksongs, die er wie auf seinem ersten Album »What's bin did and what's bin hid« (1965) mit nasalem Timbre und sparsamer Gitarrenbegleitung präsentierte, wurde er oft als europäischer Bob Dylan bezeichnet; auf den folgenden Alben wie »Sunshine Superman« (1966) zeigte sich Donovan experimentierfreudiger. 1968 waren drei seiner LPs zugleich in den US-Bestsellerlisten; in den 1970er- und 1980er-Jahren ließen seine Erfolge nach, 1991 unternahm Donovan einen Comebackversuch.

['dɔnəvən], Charles, irischer Tropenarzt, * Südirland 19. 9. 1863, ✝ Madras 29. 10. 1951; trat 1891 in den indischen Sanitätsdienst ein, wurde Professor in Madras; entdeckte 1903 den schon 1900 von Sir W. Leishman gesehenen Erreger der Kala-Azar neu (Leishmania donovani, Leishmaniasen).
